G9, the very top of MIDI
Some notes exist less as music than as edges. G9 is one of them, the highest pitch the MIDI standard can name, sitting at the absolute top of the protocol's range. It is note number 127, and that number is the whole story. MIDI addresses notes with a 7-bit value, and seven bits can count no higher than 127. G9 is simply the last address available, the ceiling written into the format itself rather than into any instrument. Nothing above it can be named, not because no higher pitch exists in the world but because the standard has run out of numbers to call it by.
Its frequency underlines how theoretical the note is. G9's fundamental sits at 12543.854 Hz, above twelve and a half kilohertz, which places it beyond the top of most adult hearing. For many listeners it is not a note you would perceive as a tone at all, more a faint hiss or nothing whatever, since human high-frequency sensitivity fades steadily with age. You are far more likely to encounter G9 as a number in a piece of software than as a sound in a room.
That is really what makes it worth noticing. G9 is less a note you would ever play than a limit of the system that describes notes, the point where a technical standard, not a piano or a voice, decides that the counting stops. It marks the far boundary of the digital musical world, a pitch defined more by seven bits than by anything you could hum. Beyond MIDI note 127 there is only silence in the protocol, and G9 stands at that final address, the top of everything the format can name.
